Pilot Plan "School of Special Education

Father Sebastian Cavalotto"

The non-profit Association ElSerLibreYFeliz, Inc. starts its operations in the Dominican Republic on March 1, 2016 celebrating our launch "The Day of Zero Discrimination" with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). On this important date we present our first pilot project in which the UNDP is providing us with technical advice to improve education and living conditions for more than 200 children and adolescents with special needs of the Sebastian Cavalotto School, in the city of La Romana , Dominican Republic.

The nonprofit association ElSerLibreYFeliz, Inc. has the purpose of preparing children and adolescents with disabilities and at risk so that they can lead a productive and independent life, and in turn create an environment in their environment of acceptance and respect where they can grow and develop without limitations.

The project includes actions that promote visibility and socialize the results of the products obtained and the activities carried out in order to improve future interventions.

STUDENTS: Diagnosis of mental health, establish profile, intervention and educational development.

PARENTS: Intervention and education to better help and protect their children.

TEACHERS: Train and motivate according to your needs.

COMMUNITY: Promote the inclusion, cooperation and hiring of adolescents with special needs and at risk.

We will work to reduce iniquities and improve the inclusion of children and adolescents with special needs and at risk. We will advocate for a receptive, friendly, open and compassionate society that promotes inclusion and social justice. These special children and adolescents will be part of those who will lead our Nation in the future.

In this sense, the project has three major components:

1) Diagnosis of universal accessibility to be met by the physical environment, infrastructure, building, processes, goods, products, services, objects or instruments, tools and devices that support the understanding and use of students in conditions of equality , safety and comfort.

2) Improvement of special education for students through early intervention with a pedagogical and therapeutic focus, offering care through assessment and diagnostic areas, school program, outpatient services, homeschooling, early stimulation, language therapy and audiometry, learning therapy and other health services.

3) Design of a sustainability strategy focused on the students in order to achieve an inclusive education and professional guidance for their job placement and at the same time focused on the perspective of school sustainability.

The project includes actions that promote visibility and socialize the results of the products obtained and the activities carried out in order to improve future interventions.

This initiative will generate installed capacities for the Padre Sebastian Cavalotto Special Education School that will result in the institution's sustainability through the strengthening of operational and technical capacities to provide services to Children and Adolescents with disabilities in an efficient manner , effective and transparent. This will be carried out by the non-profit Association ElSerLibreYFeliz, which will imply that the responsibilities for the execution of the project will fall on the team designated by the association, who will ensure compliance with the agreed work plans. This strategy will promote the appropriation of the initiative by the association and will lay the foundations to guarantee the installation and permanence of the capacities required for the continuity of the actions and the progressive growth of the Father Sebastian Cavalotto Special Education School.

Our goal is that this intervention is pilot and can be directed to other Special Education Schools in the country.

Founder's message

"The worst disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis but rather feeling unloved, not cared for and abandoned by everyone."

- Mother Teresa of Calcuta

Message from our Founder

Andres Velez

The inauguration of our foundation was celebrated on the Day of Zero Discrimination, the 1st. March 2016, a very important day for the protection of discriminated people who can not defend themselves.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta once said, I quote; "The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis but rather feeling unloved, not cared for and abandoned by everyone."

The School of Special Education Father Sebastian Cavalotto is one of several educational works of this great priest who was clear about this need. This school is our pilot plan to develop a national model, for which we have the institutional support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).

The Cavalotto School has 37 years established in the city of La Romana in the sector Villaverde, operating with limitations of many resources in the training of its more than 200 students with special needs, understand children and adolescents with autism, down syndrome , cerebral palsy, deafness, intellectual disability, among other disabilities that affect children and are due to some wrong functioning of the brain.

The children and adolescents who suffer from these disabilities are sources of much anguish, sadness and stress in their family but at the same time they are the object of much love and humanitarian effort.

For a decade we have collaborated with a group of friends and taxpayers making the Christmas parties at the Cavalotto School a memorable and happy occasion for all students, parents and teachers.

The time has come to strengthen this initial movement. With your support together, ElSerLibreYFeliz will make the improvement of the School's facilities, the educational program, the care and follow-up of psychological treatments, education for parents, training and pedagogical and therapeutic updating, all a programmed effort for the benefit of children. , your relatives and our community.

There is still a misconception of children and adolescents with special needs, considered incapable of growing up and becoming adults with the potential to work, run a business, pursue higher education, among other negative and uncertain social perceptions. Our foundation, UNDP and other collaborators will work hard to change this adverse perception for a truth full of opportunities, hope, openness and cooperation.

Every BEING must have engraved in his mind and soul that he is a FREE, useful, valuable person, with opportunities AND the right to be HAPPY. God bless us all!
